I have a fear of confronting stories like these. Sometimes I can’t tell if they at some point give me comfort, pain, or even both.
I need to come forward with it. I no longer want to hide from it anymore.

During summer break, I decided to visit my Lola in Oakland as a surprise. We sat on the couch and I finally asked her questions about her life and my mom’s life: How did she and my Lolo meet? What did she do for a living? How was it moving to the US? What was my mom like growing up? I knew bits and pieces of my family’s story, but she went more in depth; I was fond of hearing about how my Lola and Lolo were seamstresses. They made my mom’s uniforms and it was how they made their living.
